Today, Thursday, June 30th, the emeritus professor of electoral sociology of the University of Athens, Elias Nicolakopoulos, breathed his last breath. According to reports, his heart gave out on him.
Elias Nikolakopoulos was born in Athens. He completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics in Athens and Lausanne (1965-1969) and then postgraduate studies in Paris (Diplome d’ Etudes Approfondies - Theory of Probability - Univ. Paris 6).
From 1975 to 1966 he worked at the National Centre for Social Research, specialising in electoral sociology and empirical research on political culture (initially as a research associate and since 1988 as Principal Researcher).
In 1984 he defended his doctoral thesis at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Department of Law) on the subject of political parties and parliamentary elections in Greece 1946-1964. From 1986 to 2014 he taught at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens (initially as Lecturer and since 2003 as Professor) and for 8 years he was in charge of the Postgraduate Programme «Political Science and Sociology».
Since 1984 he has published seven independent works (two in collaboration with others), edited six edited volumes, and has published over 40 articles on electoral sociology and political history. He has occasionally collaborated on research projects with the Centre d’ Etudes de la Vie Politique Francaise (CEVIPOF) in Paris, with the CIS (Centro de Investigaciones Sociologicas) in Madrid, and with the Universities of Budapest and Madrid (Universita Autonoma).
