Positive step for the resolution on reduced VAT
The Kythera Municipal Council approved a resolution calling for the introduction of a reduced VAT rate in Kythera and Antikythera, an issue of major importance for our island society, the local economy and the daily life of the residents.
The municipal faction «All Together, Kythira - Antikythera» voted in favour of the resolution, consciously and documented supporting a fair and mature demand, based on both the European and the constitutional framework for insularity. The application of reduced VAT rates is not a privilege, but a tool of equality and necessary support for regions with permanent structural disadvantages.
During the discussion in the Municipal Council, it was pointed out by the leader of the faction that the increased transport costs, the accuracy in basic goods and the reduced competitiveness of local businesses disproportionately burden Kythera and Antikythera, compared to other island regions where already applies reduced VAT.
The City Council did its institutional duty. Now, the responsibility is clearly transferred to the Government and the relevant Ministries, which are called upon to make concrete decisions rather than symbolic gestures. The European and constitutional framework is in place and leaves no room for evasion.
For us, this resolution should not remain just another document in the drawers. Our party will closely monitor developments and will come back with every institutional means to ensure that the request is transformed into a substantial measure of support for society and the economy of our islands.
Kythera and Antikythera do not ask for special treatment. They are asking for equality, respect for insularity and political decisions that respond to the reality that residents and professionals experience every day.
