«Happy new school year, without problems...»
All of us are looking forward to the bell ringing again on Monday for the start of classes in the schools and kindergartens of Kythera.
It is a reminder that (even in the midst of disaster) life goes on, hope exists, the future is here.
We are concerned that there are fewer and fewer students, due to the decline in the population of our islands (a decline of 10% in the last decade according to the recent census).
We cannot ignore the fact that for another year our students will be studying in inappropriate or neglected buildings. The promises to build new modern buildings have remained promises.
At the same time we all received complaints from parents about the state of the buildings. Especially for the kindergarten in Livadi, we saw on social networks photos of abandonment, a situation that can act as a deterrent to those who want to stay on our islands with their children.
We hope that the problems will soon be addressed and the buildings will be repaired.
We declare that our priority will be the acceleration of the procedures for the construction of new school buildings in Kythera, but also the full support of the teachers who serve on our islands and whom we thank very much for their contribution to the education of our children.
