In a post on Facebook the Mayor of Kythera Efstratios Harhalakis informed citizens about the cleaning and beautification of public spaces. Read his post in detail:
«As you have already seen, for 15 days now, the cleaning of the grasses, initially on the main roads of the island and on roads with heavy traffic and tourist interest, has already started. The cleaning is carried out by private crews under a service contract signed recently by the Mayor, as it is known that our Municipality does not have a machine operator, nor a reliable and modern machine.
In addition, the Municipality's crews have been repairing the potholes in the road network since Holy Week. Citizens who wish to report the existence of a pothole to be restored, call the Technical Service, at 27360 31755, working days and hours, so that their request is recorded. Reporting such problems on social media, sometimes as irony, does not solve the problem.
The Port Fund has almost completed the painting and sprucing up of our Ports, also ahead of schedule. In fact, the equipping of the waiting room in Diakofti will soon be completed, which, with funding from the “FISH” programme that we achieved, will be equipped with air conditioners, waiting equipment, large televisions, etc. for passenger service, while 10 state-of-the-art Pillars will be installed in the main ports of the island, also from the same funding.
As far as cleaning is concerned, I stress the following: the household waste and recycling collection schedules have been adapted to the summer season and for any issue that arises, local Presidents should contact the relevant Deputy Mayor. At this point I must publicly thank the minimal staff in the cleaning sector, who often over-extend themselves to keep the island spotless. Unfortunately, however, the promiscuity and misery of some - who are completely unaware of the concept of individual responsibility, especially in cleaning - with regard to bulky and waste products continues, as they systematically throw them out of the bins, with the result that the Municipality is unable to respond to this phenomenon. I will not comment on ironic reports about the alleged “non-operation of the landfill”, because they are not only funny but also false. If the landfill were not functioning, there would be mountains of rubbish outside our homes, as there unfortunately are on many large tourist islands even now. For the work of the landfill, our Municipal Authority and I personally are incredibly proud and we have even received congratulations from the European Union and the Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira.
Failure to comply with the rules regarding bulky and AEKK products, will force us to take regulatory action, removing all the respective bins, and forcing citizens to transfer at their own risk the respective bulky to the landfill, as normally provided, paying the respective management fee, as bulky and AEKK products have huge sorting and management costs, which far exceed the usual municipal fees.».
