Mandra is healing the wounds caused by the deadly floods of 2017.

The project was handed over to traffic by the Region of Attica on 26/10 and is expected to improve the flow of vehicular traffic and upgrade the water drainage infrastructure.

Below is the Press Release, as distributed by the Region of Attica:

Delivered to traffic today the new modern road section of the Old National Road Athens-Thebes, which restores traffic in the area of Mandra, after the significant damage suffered by the motorway from the deadly floods of 2017

Γ. Patoulis: «An emblematic project that will contribute to the enhancement of road safety and to the better flood protection of Mandera, which has been severely tested, is being handed over to the citizens of West Attica today»

In the presence of the Attica Regional Governor G. Patoulis, today the Region of Attica handed over to traffic the completed, state-of-the-art road section of the Old National Road Athens-Thebes, which restores traffic in the area of Mandra, after the significant damage suffered by the motorway from the deadly floods of 2017.

Specifically, it is the section from the junction of the Old National Road with Attiki Odos to the 5ο km of the new PEO and is part of the overall project «IMPROVEMENT OF THE ENGRAVING AND WIDENING OF THE ATHENS - THEBES MOTORWAY IN THE SECTION MANDRA - COMMUNITY & RESTORATION OF THE EXISTING MOTORWAY IN THE SECTION FROM NEA ZOI MANDRA TO AGIA SOTIRA», with a budget of 24. 490.000 million euros and executed by the Region of Attica.

The project began to be implemented under the administration of the former Attica Region Governor Ms Rena Dourou and was completed by the current administration of the Attica Region, which set as an absolute priority the acceleration of the implementation of the motorway, recognizing its importance for the safety and the shielding of the region.

The Motorway is divided into two sections. In the first one, damage repair and improvement of the Old National Road Athens - Thebes P.E.O.A.TH. was carried out, along a length of about 5 km from the junction of the P.E.O.TH. with the Attiki Odos and in the second one, damage repair was carried out along a length of about 3.5 km suffered by the P.E.O.TH. after the catastrophic flood of 15of November 2017, in West Attica.

At the handover ceremony of the road that he blessed the Bishop of Megareon and Salamina Konstantinos, also present were the Vice-Regional Governor of West Attica L. Kosmopoulos, the Mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia Ch. Stathis, the President of the Municipal Community of Villia Makrinakis K., Deputy Mayors, the Director of Technical Works of the Region A. Kalogeropoulos and representatives of the contracting construction companies.

In his statements, the Attica Regional Governor said:

«Today we have the great pleasure of handing over to the people of Mandra, and not only, one of the most emblematic projects that have been done in Western Attica. A road of modern road specifications, aiming to enhance road safety for those passing through and to avoid new disasters from possible flooding phenomena. The aim of the Region of Attica is to ensure the safety of citizens - drivers and residents in the highly affected areas of Mandra, in Western Attica, where we have mourned our fellow citizens due to the deadly floods of 2017.

We are shielding the area and protecting the safety of residents, with parallel projects that improve water drainage infrastructure.

I would like to thank and congratulate all those who participated in the implementation of this project, with a budget of 24 million euros, the competent services of our Region for the excellent work they have done, the contractor company and all those who carried out this project with excellence and within the timeframe. This road section that we are delivering today has nothing to envy from its counterparts in other European countries, as it is of modern standards that enhance the safety of drivers and residents. I am sure that the municipal authority, the citizens of West Attica and all those who want to see our country modernised will be particularly pleased.

In conclusion, I would like to point out that subsequent parts of this project have already been studied. The remaining part up to 17ο km of the PEAOTH and upon their completion they will join this already constructed road axis, composing a modern road network for Western Attica.

In his statements the Mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia Ch. Stathis stressed the following:

«The inauguration that took place was about the obvious.

I think 24 people from above are smiling right now. If you will allow me, Mr. Regional Governor, this road has passed into our consciousness here in my fellow citizens, in the people of Mandra, as the road of the immortals.».

Information about the project

The first section of the road project, approximately 5 km long from Attiki Odos to the settlement of Nea Zoi Mandra, includes:

Complete reconstruction of the PEOTH, with expropriation and widening (from 8 metres to 25 metres), construction of storm water drainage networks, pavements, electric lighting, new public utility networks.

Build a new 1600-metre-long track, which avoids as much as possible the crossings of the P.E.O. with the Soures stream, taking into account the conditions as they were formed after the natural disaster of 11/2017.

So:

  • The roadway is made independent of any extreme flooding behavior of the stream.
  • The possibility of the project's destruction and the consequent loss of human lives is definitively avoided.
  • Improving the quality of traffic flow.
  • The road link between Mandra and Erythres is upgraded in terms of geometric characteristics and the width of the road, with the aim of enhancing road safety for the benefit of its users.
  • It creates prospects for the development of the wider region.

It also became complete construction of three level roundabouts, of a T-shaped isopodal node and an intersection isopodal node, with electric lighting, construction of a 1 km long transverse road network and construction of a bridge.

In the Second Section of about 3,5 km length km from Nea Zoi Mandra to Agia Sotira, includes the repair of the damage suffered by the existing P.E.O.A.T. from the extreme flood events of 15-11-2017. In the framework of the project the following took place:

  1. Restoration of the damage with a single surface of non-slip carpet over the entire length and width of the road
  2. Construction of retaining walls with a total length of approximately 1.6 km to protect the road in the sections parallel to the Soures stream.
  • Construction of horizontal, vertical marking and securing.

Also, the water supply network was reconstructed from the existing pumping station along the PEOTH to the entrance of the settlement of Agia Sotira.
