Unanimous approval of the second extension for the completion of the critical project «Drainage of the southern part of the island of Kythera» the Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Kythera. The decision (No. 58/2026) was taken at the 11th regular meeting of the body, which was held in a mixed manner (in person and via videoconference) under the chairmanship of the Mayor, Efstratios Harhalakis.
With this new decision, the deadline for completion of the works (which does not include the trial run) is extended by 30 days, postponing the delivery date from 31 May 2026 to 30 June 2026.
Why the project is delayed
According to the official request of the contractor and the recommendation of the Technical Service of the Municipality, the delays are due to «objective events» beyond the responsibility of the contractor:
7-month delay from Archaeology: Although the contract stipulated that all excavations had to be carried out under the supervision of an archaeologist , the recruitment process by the competent bodies has been significantly delayed. The relevant decision was issued seven months after the contract was signed (January 2025), freezing the works.
Bad weather and mud: Frequent, heavy rainfall and gusty winds blocked the construction of the sewerage network. The work was impossible to carry out both during the rainy days and the following 1-2 days due to the mud on the ground.
Because the above reasons are objective facts outside the contractor's sphere of responsibility, the lineup was approved «with revision».
The recommendation was fully accepted by the Municipal Committee. The decision was taken by 3 positive votes out of 3 members present. The two members of the major minority (Mr. Zacharias Souris and Mr. Panagiotis Megalokonomos) were absent from the meeting, but there was the required legal quorum for taking the decision..
