“It is a special honor to be entrusted with the task of forming a government with a four-year term,” said New Democracy President Kyriakos Mitsotakis during a meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace.
The New Democracy president reiterated that he feels “the weight of responsibility on his shoulders,” reminded everyone that from the outset he had set as his goal the formation of a self-sufficient government, and reaffirmed his commitment to implementing major changes and reforms.
“We have a strong mandate and a comfortable parliamentary majority; our government will be one of hard work and tangible results,” Mr. Mitsotakis noted. He also pointedly stated that our democracy is mature enough to handle temporary upheavals and described the eight-party Parliament as the “death rattle” of simple proportional representation.
Ms. Sakellaropoulou, for her part, emphasized that “our democracy has proven resilient” and wished Mr. Mitsotakis “good luck.”.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m.
At 1:00 p.m., Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be sworn in before the President of the Republic at the Presidential Palace. At 5:00 p.m., the composition of the New Democracy party’s new government will be announced.
Next Monday, July 3, at 11 a.m., the swearing-in ceremony for the members of Parliament elected in the recent elections will take place, and the following day, Tuesday, July 4, the plenary session of the 20th Parliamentary Session of the Presidential Parliamentary Republic will convene to elect the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, the election of the vice-speakers of the House, as well as the secretaries and deans of the Parliament.
This first phase of the new four-year term will conclude with the reading of the government’s policy statements and the vote of confidence in Parliament.
In accordance with the Constitution (Article 84) and the Rules of Procedure of the House of Representatives (Article 141) the government is required, within fifteen days of the prime minister’s swearing-in, to appear before the House of Representatives and seek a vote of confidence, following a debate on its policy statements. The three-day debate on the new government’s policy statements is expected to take place a few days after the swearing-in of the members of Parliament and the election of the Parliament’s presiding officers, and will culminate at midnight on the third day of debate with a vote of confidence in the new government.
