Mitsotakis to the Cabinet: Mandatory vaccination for those over 60 years old or else 100 euro fine

The fine will be imposed monthly on those citizens over 60 years of age who refuse to be vaccinated.

Compulsory vaccination to citizens over 60 by 16 January and provide a free of charge self-test to everyone in order to control the spread of the virus during the holiday season, the Prime Minister reportedly announced, Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the meeting of the Ministerial Council, on Tuesday.

According to reports, the measures announced by the Prime Minister are briefly as follows:

  • Mandatory vaccination for unvaccinated citizens over 60 by 16 January 2022 (they must make an appointment by then).
  • In case of non-compliance with the compulsory vaccination, an administrative fine of EUR 100 per month will be imposed. The money from the fine will go into a special fund to support the NHS.
  • The Prime Minister also announced that from 6 to 12 December, a free of charge self-test, in order to control the spread of the virus during the festive season.

In his introductory speech to the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is positioned for the evolution of the pandemic, following the emergence of the new Omicron mutation.

The meeting shall be held by videoconference.

The Cabinet of Ministers meets this morning to discuss the bills of the ministries Development, Labour, Finance, Migration and Justice.

The government insists at every turn that no tighter restrictions will be imposed on vaccinated people, and has ruled out Repeatedly the possibility of a new lockdown.

The issues to be discussed at the Cabinet meeting are the following:

  • Presentation by the Minister of Development & Investments Adonis Georgiadis and the Deputy Minister Yannis Tsakiris of the draft law on the Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework (NSDP): management, control and implementation of development interventions for the programming period 2021-2027.
  • Presentation by the Minister of Labour & Social Affairs Costis Hatzidakis and the Deputy Minister Panos Tsakloglou of the bill for the modernization of the Electronic National Social Security Institution (e-NSIFKA).
  • Presentation by Finance Minister Christos Staikouras and Deputy Minister Apostolos Vessyropoulos of the legislative initiatives: (a) Incorporation of Directives 2019/2034 on the prudential supervision of investment firms, 2019/2177 and 2020/1504 on markets in financial instruments; (b) Incorporation of Directives 2020/1151 on the harmonisation of the structures of excise duties on alcohol and alcoholic beverages, 2021/1159 concerning temporary exemptions from value added tax on imports and certain supplies of goods and services in order to deal with pandemic COVID-19.
  • Presentation by the Minister of Labour & Social Affairs Costis Hatzidakis and the Deputy Minister Domna Michaelidou on the National Strategy and Action Plan for the Social Integration of Roma 2021-2030.
  • Presentation by the Minister of Immigration & Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarakis and the Deputy Minister Sofia Voultepsi on the National Strategy for the Integration of Refugees and Unaccompanied Minors.
  • Presentation by the Minister of Justice Kostas Tsiaras on the selection of a Greek judge to the General Court of the European Union.
