Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Fire Department’s Unified Operations Coordination Center in Halandri, where he was briefed on the fires currently burning in Varibobi and various other areas of Greece, the largest of which are in Euboea, Messinia, and Kos.
According to the Prime Minister’s press office, all available resources and personnel have been deployed to fight the fires on multiple fronts; they also note that he is being kept constantly informed of the progress of the fires, as the protection of human life is the top priority during these difficult times.
At 9 p.m., Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias will hold a special briefing on the latest developments regarding the wildfires.
All fire departments across the country have been placed on general alert, following the latest ominous forecasts indicated on the risk map issued by Civil Protection for Wednesday.
As a reminder, according to the map, the forecast for tomorrow, Wednesday, August 4, 2021, is as follows:
Extreme fire danger – Alert Status (risk category 5) for the islands of the Regional Unit of Rhodes.
Very high fire risk (risk category 4) in many parts of the country.
As part of the General Alert, as announced by the Fire Department, aerial surveillance patrols are continuing, as well as joint patrols by fire, police, and military forces.
The Civil Protection Action Plan for addressing risks posed by wildfires remains in effect; under this plan, among other things, it is provided that the implementation of a precautionary ban on vehicle traffic and the presence of visitors in national parks, forests, and «vulnerable» areas.
