KIPA informs the local community about the next steps after the workshop «Kythera after the 2025 fire: restoration - regeneration, prevention», in the context of the conclusions for the valid strategy we have drawn for the mitigation of the effects of the recent fires on the island.
Specifically, and following the autopsy that the Forestry Service has done on the island, the only area that needs medium-term reforestation is the area around the Myrtidiotissa Monastery, for which a study has been requested, and which KIPA has undertaken to finance with a sense of responsibility. When we receive the study, subject to its approval by the Forestry Service, we will announce the next steps to be taken, for the knowledge and action of the stakeholders and residents of the island.
For all other areas, monitoring is needed for the coming years, although the first signs indicate that nature will manage on its own without technical interventions, but with gentle supportive actions, with respect to the Kythera land, the localness and traditional practices. Such actions will be coordinated in cooperation with experts from the institutions with which we have allied ourselves, including the Hellenic Society for Nature Conservation, WWF - Hellas, MedINA, IMDO / ELGO «Demetra», and the University of the Aegean. The diligence shown by the local community through the role of volunteerism will be crucial.
KIPA has opened a special account for the Kythera Fire Recovery Initiative.
Anyone interested in contributing to the foundation's initiative can make a direct donation to our special account at the National Bank of Greece:
IBAN: GR0401103800000038000395780, SWIFT: ETHNGRAA
The account will remain open for as long as it takes to implement our proposals, and we are starting with the study that the Forest Service needs to approve the reforestation.
Every contribution, large or small, is welcome and important.
