Chios mastic: A little treasure for your health!

Η Chios mastic  It is a natural product of particular interest, which has won over not only Greeks but also an international audience! It is produced on the island of Chios, and in its original form, it is a resin that oozes from the trunk and branches of the Pictacia lentis cusvar tree. Chia—also known as mastic tree or mint. For most people, it’s a daily habit for fresh breath, but in reality, it has so much more to offer! It’s a little treasure for our health—not only does it taste great, but it also has healing properties.

Oral Hygiene

Several studies have been conducted on the effect of Chios mastic on oral hygiene. It has been observed that its extract inhibits the activity of bacteria that cause dental plaque, while also reducing bad breath and gingivitis (Askoy et al., 2006).

Gastrointestinal system

Perhaps not many people know this, but Chios mastic has a beneficial effect on diseases of the gastrointestinal  e.g., peptic ulcers, gastritis, etc., but also for more common ailments such as indigestion, heartburn, etc. More specifically, studies have demonstrated its significant activity against Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium responsible for peptic ulcers (Bebbetal, 2003, Loughin et al., 2003).

Heart

Recent studies have also identified polyphenols in the «tear» of Chios mastic, substances with powerful antioxidant properties that protect cells from free radicals. In this way, they prevent, among other things, the oxidation of «bad» LDL cholesterol, thereby helping to prevent the easy formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the blood vessels of the heart.

Natural food preservative

Chios mastic also has a strong antibacterial action and pathogenic microorganisms found in food. For this reason, mastic essential oil is often used in food technology as a natural preservative. In addition, it imparts desirable organoleptic properties—such as a distinctive aroma—and for this reason is also used in the production of baked goods and confectionery, such as ice cream, spoon sweets, etc. In fact, it is often used in the production of traditional beverages such as liqueurs and ouzo, since, in addition to its distinctive aroma, it also reduces the harmful effects of alcohol on the stomach (Koutsoudaki et al., 2005).

In what forms do we encounter it?;

In addition to its common form as mastic or chewing gum, it is now also found in many oral hygiene products, such as toothpastes, mouthwashes, as well as in the form of a dietary supplement—usually to treat digestive disorders.

Chios mastic is one of the unique natural products of our region that deserves our attention. With antimicrobial, With its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it's not just a piece of gum—it's a little miracle right in our pocket!
