Lung Cancer: The Two Signs in Your Eyes That Should Prompt You to See a Doctor

Ο lung cancer In the early stages, it does not necessarily cause any symptoms. One symptom that should raise a red flag, however, is persistent cough or the cough that gets worse over time.

The treatment of lung cancer depends on the type of mutation the cancer has, the stage of its spread, and the patient’s overall health.

It is important to see your doctor promptly when you first notice any unusual symptoms, since treatment is more likely to be effective when cancer is detected at an early stage.

General Information Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Frequent Infections
  • Chest pain
  • Cough (productive and dry)
  • Changes in a Smoker's Cough
  • Weight Loss
  • Persistent fatigue and weakness
  • Hoarseness

This type of tumor (Pancoast) is located in the upper part of the lung, either on the right or left side. As the tumor grows, it can cause serious pain in the shoulder and upper arm.

The American Cancer Society reports that cancers of the upper part of the lungs can also affect certain nerves in the eye and part of the face, causing a group of symptoms known as Horner's syndrome.

Horner's syndrome

The general symptoms of Horner's syndrome include reduced pupil size, ptosis, and reduced sweating on the affected side of the face.

The NHS states: «Lung cancer usually does not cause any noticeable symptoms until it spreads through the lungs to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis. Unfortunately, this means it is a cancer that ranks very high on the list of causes of death. Consequently, You should see your doctor immediately if you have a persistent cough, are coughing up blood, or have persistent shortness of breath.

Symptoms may also include unexplained fatigue and weight loss, or pain when breathing or coughing.

Your doctor may ask you to have blood tests to determine whether you have elevated platelet count, as this may be a sign of lung cancer.

Cancer Research UK states that early detection of lung cancer can make it easier to treat, so if you notice any changes in your body, see your doctor as soon as possible.

The Causes of Lung Cancer

People who smoke are at greater risk of developing lung cancer, although this type of cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked.

Smoking, however, is the most common cause, accounting for approximately 72% of cases. The NHS states that if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes a day, you are 25 times more likely to develop lung cancer than a nonsmoker. If you don’t smoke, long-term exposure to secondhand smoke can also increase your risk of developing lung cancer. It should also be noted that vaping, although safer than smoking, can still increase the risk of developing the disease.

Your risk of lung cancer is higher if you have a close relative (such as a parent or sibling) who has had lung cancer due to a genetic predisposition.

Finally, exposure to certain chemicals used in various occupations and industries, such as ionizing radiation, asbestos, arsenic, and other metals, can also increase the risk of developing lung cancer.
