Coast Guard: The process of removing the boat from Lycodimos Bay is underway.

Almost two months have passed since the incident rescue of Kurdish refugee-migrants by people of the Coast Guard in Lykodimou beach (with the help of Civil Protection and Citizens in their temporary accommodation in hospitality structures in Kythera).

Since then, the migrants have now moved off the island, with traces of their presence here still remaining. Traces that have to do with their continued presence on bay of Agios Eleftherios -where it ran aground- of the boat carrying them from the coast of Turkey.

Kythera.News has recently received testimonies -accompanied by photographic material- from visitors to the area, who claim that plastic objects and other materials from the interior of the vessel have been scattered on the shore and threaten to pollute the area.

In our communication with the Coast Guard Outpost Diakofti Kythera, we were told that, on the part of the Coast Guard, a case file has been drawn up and the boat has been seized. The issue has now been taken up by Customs, the Directorate for the Management of Public Material (DΔΔY) and the Piraeus Public Prosecutor.

Finally, we also addressed the Municipality, so that provision can be made to clean up the area before it becomes a further environmental burden.
