The second Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is fully aligned with the new circumstances, «Kythera Trails» Sustainable Tourism Development Program» It will be signed on the morning of Saturday, May 28, 2022, in the presence of Australian Ambassador to Greece, cementing the successful collaboration to date among the four organizations: the Municipality of Kythira, the Committee for Local Property of Kythira and Antikythira (EEPKA), the Kythira Foundation for Culture and Development (KIPA), and the Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Humanity (MedINA).
Kythera Trails is now one of the most recognized and comprehensive initiatives in Greece. The first phase of the program could not have ended in a better way: the platinum award for sustainable tourism development at the prestigious ‘Tourism Awards 2022,’ the flagship event of the Greek tourism industry.

The previous Memorandum of Cooperation was in effect from September 30, 2017, through December 31, 2020, and resulted in a series of innovative projects and initiatives. The Kythera Trails network has been expanded to 100 kilometers (from 32) and now consists of 11 themed trails. Based on scientific documentation and ethnographic research, narratives were developed that highlight 417 sites of cultural and natural heritage along these routes. All of this information is easily accessible on the project’s new website and via the mobile app.
Among other things, Kythera Trails is a member of the Global Trails Network, has been awarded the Green Flag Trails certification, has participated in numerous international forums and themed exhibitions, and has been the subject of many articles published in print media and on websites. The tourist season is gradually lengthening, boosting the island’s businesses and supporting youth entrepreneurship. Kythira is leading the way in the rapidly growing adventure tourism sector and the goal is for them to become a leading sustainable destination through the new Memorandum of Cooperation.
