A judge died the day before yesterday, Sunday, from injuries he sustained when he was attacked with a firearm in the state of Zacatecas (north), according to sources close to the authorities in that Mexican state, which is among those hardest hit by the wave of violence sweeping the country.
Judge Roberto Elias was found by police officers injured inside his car and was taken to a hospital in serious condition, the state security secretariat explained to the Reuters news agency. He died a few hours later, according to a source close to state authorities and social media posts by Arturo Nalle, head of the state judiciary.
Mr. Nale called for measures to be taken to restore peace in Zacatecas.
Zacatecas is one of the states facing the most acute problems due to the wave of violence attributed to rival drug cartels. Last year, it recorded 1,050 homicides, about 200 more than in 2020.
The commander of the National Guard in the state, General José Silvestre Ursuá, was killed in late November during a firefight with criminals, authorities announced.
