The CSKA Moscow coach was officially announced by the Greek Basketball Federation, which thanked the Russian team and President Andrei Vatutin personally for their cooperation throughout this period and gave the «green light» to the federation's request, as Itoudis is under contract with CSKA.
It should be noted that the new president of the EOK, Vangelis Liolios, had set Dimitris Itoudis as his first choice to lead the Greek national team, and after negotiations, a compromise was reached and the Greek coach will lead Greece at Eurobasket 2022.
After the agreement, the Greek coach stated: «I would like to thank Andrei Vatutin and the entire CSKA organization for giving me the green light and allowing me to coach my country's national team. It is a truly great, enormous honor. I would also like to thank Mr. Liolios and other people at the Federation for their interest and efforts in bringing me to this position.
As I have said before, something you want deep in your heart becomes reality; you create the world you live in. I know the expectations. The Greeks are a proud people, they love basketball, it brings them happiness. I also know our obligations. I hope our players stay healthy and I look forward to working hard together.
For his part, EOK President Vangelis Liolios said: «I would like to thank CSKA and its president, Mr. Vatutin, personally for their cooperation throughout this period, which led to the positive response to the request of the Greek Basketball Federation.».
