The government rejected all the amendments submitted by the opposition parties aimed at assisting citizens who are no longer able to cope with the high cost and dramatic increase in their energy bills.
The “No” was resounding in amendment proposed by SYRIZA-PS which provided that electricity service would not be cut off for those who cannot pay the surcharge due to adjustment clause, until the courts issue their rulings on the relevant appeals.
According to SYRIZA-PS, this amendment «is absolutely necessary, especially given that, although Greece is currently—and has been for quite some time—the most expensive country in Europe in terms of wholesale electricity prices, there is a lack of any effective government policy to intervene in the structure of the energy supply market to combat profiteering and prevent the generation of windfall profits as well as taxing them to provide relief to consumers».
The government also rejected the amendment submitted by PASOK-KINAL regarding the «Regulation of Electricity Supply Prices for Low- and Medium-Voltage Customers,» as well as the corresponding amendment by the KKE regarding the «Abolition of the Adjustment Clause, the Energy Exchange, the Special Levy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (ETMEAR), VAT, and excise taxes on the supply of electricity.».
