Icarian festival

Article by Tasoula Eptaikili, on the Kathimerini website.

«Surprised the doctors and nurses of the hospital in Ikaria, as well as the citizens who had rushed to be vaccinated, suddenly saw before them the Kyriakos Mitsotakis last Saturday morning. The Prime Minister flew to the island by military helicopter unannounced, without any warning, accompanied by a few close associates, to oversee the vaccination process and send a message of optimism about the outcome of the pandemic.

The same surprise was reserved for the inhabitants of the Bakery of Corsica and of Thyme, the next stop on his short tour of the Eastern Aegean Sea. “Our heart is above all in the small islands. We are now at the end. We know that vaccines work and that as the vaccination rate increases, we are getting closer to the point where we will leave the adventure behind us,” Mitsotakis said.

This is how the Prime Minister's visit to our three outlying islands should have taken place. Without an official reception at the airport of Ikaria. Without girls in traditional costumes and with bouquets in their hands. No bunches of party officials following him at his heels. No cheers and mantinades. No kids «stationed» at their school on Saturdays, waiting for him for the usual cute selfies. And, most importantly, without any of the usual hiccups.

It was not difficult at all; things could have been done in this way - quietly, modestly, practically - if only one of the Prime Minister's staff, of his many advisors, had been found to say to him «president, let's not provoke him, let's at least keep up appearances, the citizens are at their limits»... And if the MP for Samos, Christodoulos Stephanadis, had not seen the visit as an opportunity to rehearse his next election campaign (the elections are coming up soon, it seems) and to secure photographic material for his social media posts.
If, if, if... But, unfortunately, it was all done the wrong way. And the saddest thing: it is not only the social distances that were not observed on the terrace, on the stairs and in the lounge-dining room of the Stefanadi house for the «quick and short meal» and the «expression of traditional hospitality». It is the increasing distance from understanding the extremely difficult situation experienced by the Greeks, the unbearable psychological pressure. It is not enough for a prime minister to declare that he has empathy for his citizens. He must also demonstrate this at every moment.
