On February 4th 2021 the Regulatory Authority of Energy (RAE) announced it rejected several applications for RES (Renewable Energy Sources) projects on Kythira on the basis of disqualifying the companies for either not confirming or not updating their initial applications.
WHAT IS NOT in that list of rejected applications by RAE however are two projects of the joint venture of TERNA-VECTOR ΑΙΟΛΙΚΗ ΠΟΡΦΥΡΙΣ, sited in the areas of XEROKAMBIA (in front of Petrouni) and KORDELIDES (in the area of Routsounas).
These 2 wind farms can be seen on the map of Kythira marked in yellow. Also In yellow is a very recent project application in the area of St. George/Palaiopoli. The 4 already existing production licenses are marked in green.
The 2 wind farms are being sited in the most virgin region of the island, an area that belongs to the Natura 2000 network. If they go ahead a whole industrial setting is going to rise alongside Karavas and its crystal clear springs. It will consist of 26 + 24 wind turbines of 2MW each, to produce a total of 100MW. Their impact on the landscape, nature, tourism and people’s health and assets is immense.
These 2 projects together with the projects of already existing production licenses give a total output of 253.5 MW.
According to the Action Plan of the Municipality of Kythira, the daily energy needs of the island is 3.5 MW (this amount doubles during the summer months).
Therefore we are talking about 74 times more than the energy needs of the island. The surplus goes straight to profit the big energy companies.
On the basis of the above, and since the specific applications are not among those in the list of the previously rejected applications, they are very likely to be approved soon and granted production licences.
Once this happens, there will be a deadline of 28 days, by which we must file our legal appeals, and direct action and mobilisation will be critical.
