Photovoltaics on the roof: Energy autonomy and significant benefits for thousands of households

Energy autonomous households will become largely self-sufficient by joining the «Photovoltaics on the Roof» program announced last week, with the addition of the free (with a subsidy of up to 100 %) battery and the right choice of system that fits their consumption profile.

It is recalled that, according to the terms of the notice, the installation of a battery is mandatory in domestic systems, the cost of which is subsidized at a rate of 90-100 %.

The way the photovoltaic system operates aims to maximise the self-consumption of the energy produced by the photovoltaic (PV), i.e. the energy autonomy of the household. In particular, according to Article 5 of the notice:

-During the operation of the system (PV with battery) the energy produced by the PV station is primarily channelled to the beneficiary's consumption. Any excess generation is primarily channelled to the storage system until it is filled and secondarily, the available energy of the PV can be injected into the grid.

-In periods when the energy produced by the PV station is not sufficient to cover the beneficiary's consumption, these are covered primarily by discharging the storage system and secondarily by absorbing energy from the grid.

Thus, the needs of the household are covered first by the production of the photovoltaic, then by the battery and the last option is the absorption of energy from the grid.

According to indicative examples elaborated by the Association of Photovoltaic Companies and presented at a recent workshop (https://helapco.gr/greece-energy-news/ekdilosi-sef-gia-aytokatanalosi-savvato-18-martioy-2023/) :

-A household with an annual consumption of 4,500 kilowatt-hours, with the installation of a 3 kilowatt photovoltaic and a battery with a capacity of 5 kilowatt-hours, ensures the coverage of more than 90 % of its electricity needs (the annual production of the photovoltaic ranges at 1.Thus the benefit with the current data of energy prices and installation costs minus subsidy (indicative) 55 % from the program reaches 23.250 euros in 25 years.

As the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, stressed, «With the Photovoltaic Roof programme, thousands of households and farmers will gain energy autonomy, producing and storing their own sustainable energy. It is our firm decision that the path to the green transition should be done with Justice for All».

Beneficiaries of the «Photovoltaics on the Roof» Programme are households and farmers who will be able to install their own small photovoltaic system, combined with a storage system (battery). The subsidy for the PV system starts from 45% and goes up to 75% for households. The corresponding rates for farmers are 40% - 60%, while the total subsidy of the PV system with battery can reach up to €16,000 for households and €10,000 for farmers.

In addition, a special bonus 10% is provided for disabled persons, spouses and dependants of disabled persons, single-parent, three-parent and large families.

The application platform https://pvstegi.gov.gr opened last Tuesday and will remain open until the available funds of €238 million are exhausted. The decision to launch the programme was published in the Government Gazette on the same day (Government Gazette 2903/B/02-05-2023).
