One of the hottest January's in recent years has been this year. The average monthly maximum temperature in January 2023 was the highest of the last 14 years in most of the country, according to the network of 53 meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr that have been operating continuously since 2010.
This January was the warmest, at least since 2010, in Northern Greece, Thessaly, the Peloponnese and the Aegean Islands (except Crete). In the other regions it ranks as the second warmest, behind 2014 for Western Greece, and behind 2021 for Central Greece and Crete.
Northern Greece and Thessaly recorded the most days with positive temperature deviations. In Makrochori Veria, 29 of the 31 days of the month were warmer than the average value of the 2010-2019 period, as well as in Trikala and Dion, where 28 days recorded positive deviations.
In Athens, the average monthly maximum temperature deviation was +1.8°C, with 25 days warmer than normal for the season, and Thessaloniki recorded the warmest January since 2010, with a positive deviation of +3.6°C and 24 days of positive temperature deviations. Another interesting fact is that no weather station recorded negative monthly mean temperature deviations.
