When the country's school buildings are being transformed from places of learning into hotbeds of danger and sloppiness, society and especially local government must sound the alarm. Instead, we often witness a theatre of absurdity, an endless blame game and criminal, prolonged inaction.
The chronicle of institutional indifference
You don't have to look far to find examples of dropouts in public schools. The picture, unfortunately, is repeated with frightening similarity in many districts:
- The permanence of the «temporary» (Container Halls): The absolute epitome of institutional inefficiency. Metal boxes (isoboxes) that were «planted» in courtyards as an emergency solution to meet emergency housing needs, but eventually took root for decades.
- Building damage and static: Cracks in ceilings and walls that are treated with a simple «paint job», ignoring the real risk of subsidence or material retreat. Balconies falling and falling apart in the courtyard, testifying to poor control and inadequate maintenance.
- The dangerous battle with the weather: Hallways that stagnate without proper gutters, dripping water in classrooms and basements - often dangerously close to electrical installations - and a complete lack of basic shade, leaving students exposed to the risk of heatstroke in the sunny months.
- Inappropriate and worn equipment: Sports facilities with rusty or dilapidated basketball courts, courtyards with protruding wires, dangerous equipment.
Teachers in the role of «stuntmen»
What is most infuriating about this situation is the burden that teachers bear. People who entered the classrooms to teach end up serving as structural engineers, custodians and security technicians.
They are forced to modify their lessons, ban play in certain areas or cancel sports activities, just to get the children back home in shape. When teachers and instructors go so far as to issue written warnings, absolving themselves of responsibility for possible accidents due to the infrastructure, it means that the knot has been tied.
The time of responsibility
The usual tactics of those in charge - from school committees and municipalities to ministries - are summarized in promises, bureaucratic delays and excuses about «lack of funds» or «incompetence». The problem is «lost» in protocols and approvals.
It is unthinkable for an educational institution to operate under conditions of constant danger or to cram students into metal containers. We cannot afford to wait for the next accident to see tearful statements in front of the cameras. School safety requires urgent structural checks, substantial renovations and the construction of modern buildings today. As long as those in charge turn a deaf ear, they are playing Russian roulette with the most valuable part of our society. And in this game, there is no room for discounts.
