«Modern Love. Love in the years of cold intimacy» is the major group exhibition of the EMST with which the new exhibition cycle of the museum begins on 15/12. It focuses on digital technology and the internet, their influence on contemporary societies and their relationship to work, body and speech. It is an exhibition about love and close human bonds in the years of late capitalism, globalisation, digital interconnection and social media.
Five Greek and nineteen international artists from fourteen countries are participating, many of whom are presenting their work for the first time in Greece. The exhibition is the product of ongoing research and comes to the EMST after presentations at the Museum für Neue Kunst-Museum of Contemporary Art in Freiburg, Germany, the Kunsthalle in Tallinn, the IMPAKT Media Organization and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
«Modern Love» examines how the internet and social media have, on the one hand, facilitated the expression of different identities and alternative ways of being and constructing the self, and how, on the other hand, they play an aggravating role in the cultivation of pathologies such as narcissism, self-promotion obsession, digital addiction and the commodification of emotion.
The exhibition borrows its subtitle from Eva Illouz's book, Cold Intimacies: The Making of Emotional Capitalism, which analyses how contemporary close, intimate relationships are increasingly determined by economic and political models of negotiation and exchange.
This major group exhibition will be followed by a series of solo exhibitions in January 2023, focusing on the impact of digital technology, the internet, social media and the economy they produce on social relationships and contemporary life.
