The project was inaugurated by the Governor of Attica Nikos Chardalias with the Deputy Governor of the Islands Yannis Voutsinas and the Mayor of Kythera-Antikythera Efstratios Harhalakis.

The consecration was performed by the priest Ioannis Papandropoulos in the presence of the officials and many attendees in a nice short event despite the heat.

With the inauguration of the new Makrona bridge, the visit of Attica's regional governor Nikos Chardalias to the island of Kythera and Antikythera was completed yesterday. The project, carried out with resources of the Region of Attica and involves the construction of a new bridge to replace the old, which was demolished, at the point where the stream of Makronas intersects the road Friligianika - Paleopolis.

«The reconstruction of the Makrona bridge is an important project for road safety, the daily life of the residents of Kythera, as well as the strengthening of tourism development on the island. The Region of Attica, with consistency and responsibility, continues to invest in infrastructure projects that improve the quality of life and enhance the safety of citizens. This new bridge is not just a technical project, but a symbol of our commitment to support Kythera with infrastructure that will contribute to the growth and prosperity of the local community. A symbol of our commitment that no citizen of Attica, even in the remotest part of Attica, will feel lonely».

The project contract, costing 1,178,438 euros, included the construction of a 29-metre-long, 7.50-metre-wide reinforced concrete bridge with pavements of variable widths from 1 to 1.90 metres. In addition, widening was carried out and safety parapets and vertical markings were installed.

Earlier, the regional governor met with the mayor Stratos Harhalakis and members of the administration at the Kythera town hall and discussed the projects included in the NSRF of the region as well as those that are ripe to be included. They also discussed basic infrastructure projects, such as the water supply - sewerage network of the Northern Section - Agia Pelagia, the kindergarten in Logothetianika, road construction - maintenance of the road network, as well as the construction of a municipal open theatre in Potamos.

The regional governor pledged that he will evaluate the proposals submitted to him, in the context of the proper utilization of the financial instruments available to the Region, with emphasis on the potential of the «Attica» 2021 - 2027 Programme. «With responsibility and without grandstanding we will be by your side, ensuring that we will proceed together in the implementation of critical projects for the development of Kythera and the well-being of its residents», he said.

Mr.Hardalias in the settlement of Chora, talked with residents, businessmen and representatives of olive oil cooperatives. To whom he reaffirmed the commitment of the Region for the development of local communities with projects that enhance social and economic well-being.

He then visited the local landfill site in the area of Lachnos and was informed about the situation and the needs of the facility. Finally, he went to the holy pilgrimage of Panagia Myrtidiotissa of Kythera, where he was welcomed by the Metropolitan of Kythera and Antikythera, Mr. Seraphim.
