The singer Yannis Vogiatzis, one of the great stars of the 1960s, who was active in all artistic fields, in theatre, cinema and radio, has died at the age of 89.
Yannis Vogiatzis was born on 20 December 1934. He began his involvement with singing at the talent nights of Joseph Korinthiou. He was awarded twice with the 1st prize at the Thessaloniki Song Festival in 1963 with the song «Fly a bird» (by Kostas Klavvas and Alexis Alexopoulos) and in 1970 with the song «My brothers and sisters are bum birds» (by Tolis Voskopoulos and Ilias Liberopoulos).
He was an ardent supporter of Panathinaikos and sang the team's anthem. From 1958 to 1962 he was the official singer of the palace. In 1970 he had surgery for polyps and after three years he stopped singing. From 1978 he resumed singing again.
Yannis Vogiatzis collaborated with all the well-known creators of light singing, while he also performed songs by Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Mimis Plessa, Giorgos Mouzakis, Giorgos Theodosiadis, Kostas Kapnissi etc. He made very big hits with songs such as «A sky with stars», «Our first night», «I told you one», «I love you in all languages’, »Night of summer«, »I want to stay close to you« etc. He and his namesake, the actor Yannis Vogiatzis, were first cousins.
