A particularly significant donation that directly strengthens the infrastructure and daily life of the remote Municipal Community of Antikythira has come to public attention. During the recent regular meeting of the Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Kythira, held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the acceptance of a donation of a water tanker (tanker truck) was unanimously approved.
The vehicle is a gift from the company «CHAMPION JET N.E.» and the well-known shipowner Mr. Marios Iliopoulos.
The Letter from the Mayor of Kythira
Following the completion of the formal procedure and the transmission of Municipal Committee Decision No. 90/2026, the Mayor of Kythira and Antikythira, Eustratios Charhalakis, sent an official letter of thanks to Mr. Iliopoulos. In his letter, Mr. Charchalakis expresses the heartfelt gratitude of both the elected officials and staff of the Municipality, as well as the residents of Antikythera themselves.
Among other things, the mayor emphasizes the deeper national and social significance of this initiative, noting in particular:
«We hope that your noble gesture will continually inspire others to follow your example, especially when it comes to supporting the small islands of our homeland, which is tantamount to supporting the very soul of Greece. For if the small islands are abandoned, Greece is in danger.».
The Municipal Committee Meeting
The acceptance of the donation was the 7th item on the agenda of the Committee, which met in a hybrid format (in person and via Zoom) in the «Mayor Artemios Kalligeros» hall.
At the meeting, chaired by Mayor Efstratios Charchalakis, there was a legal quorum with the presence of the majority members Dimitrios Kalligeros and Georgios Kominos, as well as the leader of the largest minority group, Zacharias Souris.
The tanker truck is expected to be transported to Antikythira in the near future, where it will immediately begin serving the local community, meeting the island’s ongoing and vital needs.
