On 8 November 2024, the 21st meeting of the Kythera Municipal Council took place. The meeting was attended by the majority of members, although there were some delays in attendance.
At the briefing stage, Deputy Mayor George Kominos clarified the role of the Municipality's staff, stressing that civil servants carry out orders and do not exercise administration, clarifying the power structure, implying an issue that has arisen with the service recently.
Also, Councillor Nikos Magoulas denounced Mr.Sophios for insulting the ceremony during the recent parade, pointing out the need to respect national and cultural traditions, rejecting attitudes that go against «political culture». He also asked Mr. Sophio's faction to respond to the issue of the STI's decision on holy shrines.
Here are the main issues and decisions discussed:
- Financial management issues and water charges: A 25% increase in water charges was approved, despite opposition from some members who argued that an across-the-board increase is unaffordable, especially for vulnerable groups. The need for new water regulations separating domestic and business accounts was discussed.
- Social welfare: The reduction or exemption of water and sanitation fees for indigent, third-generation, large families and people with disabilities was unanimously approved, causing a backlash for the attitude of members who, although they ultimately voted for it in the city council, had voted no in the municipal committee.
- Traditional Potamos Bazaar: The imposition of a user fee and the need for better organisation was discussed. Despite different opinions on the adequacy of the organization, it was decided to continue with improvements in space and infrastructure.
The meeting concluded with the approval of the 2025 fee schedule and the importance of transparency and democratic operation in the decisions of the Municipality.
