A protest by teachers is scheduled for Friday at noon, parents, and citizens of Piraeus to protest the unprecedented move by the head of the region’s public schools to organize an event promoting private schools.
«We demand that the Ministry of Education, Research, and Religious Affairs intervene immediately to cancel—even at the last minute—the two-day promotional event organized by the Piraeus Branch of the National Union of Secondary School Teachers (DIDE) in support of private schools,» emphasizes the Piraeus Teachers« Union (ELME) and calls on »the teachers of Piraeus, all the unions in our city, the Labor Center, and the Parents’ Associations and Unions, to take part in the protest on Friday, March 17, at 2:30 p.m. outside the Piraeus Municipal Theater.”.
In a statement of their own, private-sector educators emphasize that «we all know what has been happening in the field of education over the past four years. We are aware of the role of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and its “excellent cooperation» with business leaders in the education sector. We simply did not expect them to go this far. »We have reached the point where the policy of fully commercializing education is being promoted by the state itself, and in the most shameful manner.« At the same time, OIELE calls for »the resignation of the Director of Secondary Education in Piraeus, whom we believe is unable to carry out his duties with objectivity and transparency.”.
