No Metro, Electric Railway, or Tram in Athens Today – Removal of the Ring

Today, Thursday 18/11, Metro, Electric and Tram are at a standstill, as a protest for the foreman killed in the CSAP on Tuesday, 16 November.

Fixed Transport workers demand safety measures and ask five crucial questions to the management of the company STASY for the accident.

It is noted that today, the buses will stop working from the beginning of the shift until 9.00 in the morning and from 9.00 in the evening until the end of the shift, as well as the trolleybuses from 13:00 until 15:00.

The statement of the STASY workers' unions states:

«The tragic accident, which claimed the life of our colleague, Petros Yiamalis, and led to another worker's death, was added to a series of accidents that occur in workplaces, with workers sacrificed on the altar of profit for the benefit of uncontrolled private interests.

A few days ago, a worker had lost his life at the Cosco piers, others were injured in the shipbuilding zone of Perama and this time death “struck” on Line 1 of STA.SY, with the victim 41-year-old Petros and three others injured.

STASY workers will not accept any further sacrifice in their workplace. We are holding a 24-hour strike on Thursday 18/11/21 to bid farewell to our colleague and demand that the causes of the accident be brought to light and that those responsible be punished.

At the same time, we call, once again, on the management of STASY to provide answers to the crucial questions:

  1. Was the private line grinding machine checked before it was used on our network? And if so, by which body;

  2. Has it been examined whether the required maintenance has been carried out, when and by whom?;

  3. Did the contractor, the company in charge of the project, comply with the safety measures?;

  4. Is it true that the same machine had malfunctioned before? If so, when and by whom was its repair checked?;

  5. What is the procedure for escorting STASY employees on contractors' motorized operations?;

All of the above, highlight the particularities of the extreme railway conditions carried out by the workers of the Fixed Transport Services. The management of STASY cannot remain uninvolved. It must provide answers and stop putting, uncontrolled, private, contractor interests in the network, who, on the altar of profit, do not care about the safety of workers.

It is recalled that in their statements, both the Union of Workers of OASA and the Union of Employees of ELPAP, demand immediate accountability for the tragic accident on line 1 of the Metro and the maintenance of infrastructure in the workplace.

 Removal of the ring

According to the General Police Directorate of Attica, the ring road in the center of Athens will not be in force today, Thursday, November 18, due to the 24-hour strike of the workers of the fixed transport (STA.SY), as well as the work stoppage of the employees of the Athens Urban Transport Organization (A.A.S.A.). The GADA asks drivers to comply with the instructions of the traffic officers to avoid causing further traffic problems.
