Kythira is a unique island in many ways. It is located at the crossroads of the Ionian, Aegean, and Cretan Seas. Mythology says that Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was born here. The town of Kythira will steal your heart from the very first moment, but it is worth taking the time to explore the island's beautiful villages.
On the east side of the island, about half an hour's drive from Chora, there's a seaside village that looks like a little piece of the Cyclades in Kythira. We are talking about the picturesque fishing village of Avlemonas with its Venetian fortress at the top and small coves with crystal clear green waters.
Avlemonas, perhaps the most beautiful seaside village on Kythira, has its own devoted fans who return every year. The village is built between two small, peaceful bays. The natural environment is reminiscent of the Cyclades, as is its architecture, which has Aegean influences. The fishermen's boats complete the picturesque scene.
A stroll through the village of Avlemonas offers opportunities for swimming in the beautiful little cove that resembles a natural, turquoise pool, sunbathing on the rocks, eating at the fish taverns, and enjoying coffee and drinks by the sea. You can also rent a boat to explore the eastern coast of the island. Near Avlemonas is the beach of Paleopolis, which is the largest and one of the most beautiful on the island.
The historical monument of Avlemonas is the Castello, a small 16th-century fortress that served to guard the area and the port. It is said that Lord Elgin's ship «Mentor,» carrying the Parthenon marbles, was shipwrecked near this fortress. Also important is the building with the sundial, located on the back beach.
One of the oldest trails on the island starts from the picturesque little port of Avlemonas, which was used by the ancient inhabitants of Kythira to reach the Minoan Sanctuary of Korifi. The hike to the little church of Agios Georgios on the mountain with its Byzantine mosaic is an amazing experience. The view of the entire island, especially the eastern coast of Kythira, will remain unforgettable.
