AstraZeneca has announced that it is withdrawing its coronavirus vaccine, which has been found to cause serious side effects such as blood clots, specifically TTS, or thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome.
This is a serious condition in which a person develops abnormal blood clots in the brain or other parts of the body and is also associated with low platelet levels.
AstraZeneca attributed its decision to withdraw the coronavirus vaccine to reduced demand for the vaccine due to a «surplus of available updated vaccines» targeting new variants of the virus, following Tuesday's (May 7) the European Medicines Agency announced that the vaccine was no longer authorized for use.
It should be noted that AstraZeneca admitted in court documents filed with the British Supreme Court in February 2024 that the vaccine «may, in very rare cases, cause TTS.».
However, AstraZeneca insisted that the decision to withdraw the vaccine was not related to the court case or its admission that it could cause TTS. It said that the timing was pure coincidence.
In a statement, the company said: «We are incredibly proud of the role Vaxzevria has played in ending the global pandemic. According to independent estimates, more than 6.5 million lives were saved in the first year of use alone, and more than three billion doses were administered worldwide.».
