The Kythira Archaeological Museum brings together ancient artifacts and works of contemporary art

The works in the exhibition "Studio Per L’Eternità" serve as conduits of energy between different eras, transforming the archaeological finds into vessels of an enduring presence that spans the centuries.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and the Islands is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the Archaeological Museum of Kythira with the presentation of the art exhibition “Studio Per L’Eternità” by Katerina Harou, curated by Maria Kasimati Tsoutsia.

The exhibition marks a particularly symbolic moment in the institution’s history, as this is the first time that works of contemporary art are displayed alongside archaeological finds in the museum’s display cases. In this way, the display cases are transformed into spaces for dialogue and reflection, where the museum’s narrative is no longer organized exclusively through a linear historical sequence. The works function as conduits of energy between different temporalities, restoring to the archaeological finds the capacity to be experienced not only as artifacts of a past civilization but also as vessels of an enduring, almost sacred presence that transcends the centuries.

The central theme of the art exhibition is the series *Sea*, which emerged from the artist’s exploration of water as a place of memory, transition, and transformation. It is the culmination of many years of interdisciplinary research into the island’s geology, mythology, and historical stratifications. The result of a systematic field study and a deep, experiential relationship with the natural and cultural landscape of Kythira, the exhibition is conceived as a meeting ground between archaeology and contemporary artistic thought, between trace and memory, matter and duration.

The series was first presented as part of the group exhibition HORS-LES MURS – Coup d’éclats at the Louvre Museum in 2022, under the auspices of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

With the financial support and under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, and with the support of the Kythira Foundation for Culture and Development.
