The next wave of bad weather starts in the afternoon

The weather conditions in Central Macedonia are in remission today, a few hours before the next wave of bad weather starts in the afternoon, with rain and snow, which will last until noon on Friday. According to the head of the Department of Civil Protection of the Region of Central Macedonia, Bampi Stergiadis, the process of restoration in areas affected in previous days by heavy rainfall is underway.

He told APE-MPE that «committees of engineers are visiting the areas of Central Macedonia where floods occurred, for state aid» and specifically «they are going to the prefecture of Pella to check the damage and start to draw up the statements for compensation». At the same time, he said, project machinery is carrying out restoration work from the floods in Skydra, Almopia and Giannitsa, as well as in Kilkis (in Griva and Kastaneri) and in Pieria (in Karitsa and Leptokarya). Clean-ups by the region are also taking place in Imathia at the Krassopoulou Stream.

Snow removal at the ski resorts has started - 6,500 tons of salt in the warehouses

In the meantime, the Region has already begun snow removal in the areas of the ski resorts of Central Macedonia, while there is sufficient salt in the warehouses located in all regional units. «In the warehouses there are about 6,500 tons of salt throughout Central Macedonia,» Stergiadis said, adding that the services and project machinery are in full readiness and alert while an inspection was carried out at all construction sites in all prefectures.

Regarding the development of the weather phenomena, he said that in the afternoon rainfall will begin throughout Central Macedonia, but not with the severity recorded yesterday. However, several snowfalls are expected tomorrow in areas with altitudes up to 300 to 400 metres. Most of them, according to him, concern mountainous areas, as it is not excluded that snow will also fall in Chortiatis tonight, during the night and all day tomorrow, with the phenomena subsiding on Friday at noon.

Addressing citizens, in view of the next wave of bad weather, the head of the Department of Civil Protection of the Region of Central Macedonia, recommended special attention, especially from tonight until Friday. As stressed, drivers should have their vehicles equipped with anti-slip chains and move at low speeds in areas where frost may occur in the morning hours. Finally, he noted that they should avoid driving on Irish crossings during heavy rainfall.
