The development of telegraphy and the signal telegraph of Kythera (Video & Slideshow)

This was the title of a very important speech he gave

Academician M. Korres presented at the Academy of Athens, on October 5, 2021, an important study on the signpost of Moudari, also known as Sematoreio. This is one of the most important monuments of modern history with an international dimension. Watch Manolis Korres' lecture and a slideshow of the presentation curated by Kythera.News in video below. At the end is a biography of the academic.

Telegraphy, as a high technology, was developed during the Napoleonic wars, first in France and very soon in the other countries involved, but also in others across the Atlantic. At that time, machines for forming optical signals, complex printed codes and telegraphic buildings equipped with telegraphic machines, telescopes and various special devices were created. These were staffed by the specialized personnel of the Transit, Land and Sea Services. With the electric telegraph the original form of telegraphy became obsolete, the stations were demolished, the equipment was looted or ended up in metal recycling, and all that remains are some place names. However, some coastal stations, necessary for communication with coastal ships, were retained even into the early 20th century.no century, but they too were abolished with the advent of Wireless Telegraphy. In Greece, such stations existed in the busiest and most strategic points of the sea routes. The most important of these was the channel between the Peloponnese and Kythera. Not by chance the most perfect telegraphic station was there. Unfortunately, due to war damage, subsequent looting and natural deterioration, this great monument of history and technology is in a very poor condition. Nevertheless, thanks to recent research, it has been possible to discover the original form of the building and much of its mechanical equipment.
