The Coast Guard issued a press release this morning regarding the accident of the Aqua Jewel in Diakofti Kythera. As stated in the press release, the result of the grounding was the the creation of a fault and the controlled inflow of water, according to the Captain's statement. Read the bulletin:
«In the afternoon hours yesterday, the Kythera Port Authority was informed that the vessel “AKOUA TZIOUEL” N.P. 11045 ran aground at the jetty of the port of Diakofti Kythera, on its departure from the island of Kythera, on its Kissamos, Crete. In the area there were adverse weather conditions (DND 5-6 Bf).
Eight passengers and forty crew members on board the vessel, who are in good health. As a result of the grounding the creation of a fault and the controlled inflow of water, according to the Captain's statement. The Port Authority activated the local emergency plan and pollution response.
From the B' Port Department of Kythera, Neapolis Voies Port Authority, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, the vessel “AQUA JIUEL” has been banned from sailing” and it's going to be inspected by a team of the Port Authority of Neapolis Voion with the assistance of a professional diver».
