Fires have been raging for a third day in the mountainous areas separating the two Greek minority municipalities of Dropolis and Foinikai in southern Albania. Since last night, the main fire front has shifted west of Mount Platovouni – Sopoti, which separates the two municipalities, burning thousands of stremmata of forest land in its path.
Since the early hours of this morning, two Greek water bombers and an Albanian Army helicopter have been operating on the burning slope of Mount Sopot in the municipality of Foinika, managing to control and contain the fire, the front of which rages over three kilometers. The ultimate goal is to prevent the fire from spreading to the villages of Mouzina, Petsa, and Gardikaki, and to protect the large nature park at Galazio Mati and the wider area, which features dense vegetation and rugged terrain, as well as several Greek minority villages.
