Today (18 April 2026) is a great milestone for accurate information, but also an occasion to celebrate an important success for «our» George Georgakis. The HANIA.news, the news project that he built with passion, completes a whole decade of life.
But behind the militant journalist who tirelessly records the pulse of Chania and Crete, there is also the man who has chosen Kythera as his ultimate summer retreat, building a strong bond with the island and its people.
A decade with journalistic ethics as a compass
As he says in his touching message for today's anniversary, HANIA.news started in a difficult period with a very conscious choice: to avoid temporary sensationalism and fragmentary information.
The result of this choice is the non-negotiable relationship of trust he has built with both his thousands of readers and the businesses that actively support an independent, independent medium.
We wish HANIA.news to be well-run for many decades to come, maintaining the same independence and responsibility. And by the way, we want to share with our audience something about Kythera.News. George Georgakakis, from the beginning of Kythera News Website, helped us and supported us in its implementation, with his knowledge and experience. We are grateful to him.
As for our George? We wish him always success, strength in his work and... we are waiting for him this summer in Kythera to celebrate his success in person!

HANIA.news | Ten years of information with responsibility and
HANIA.news completes today, April 18, 2026, ten years of continuous operation.
We started, in a difficult period, with a conscious choice: to cover aspects of local - and not only - life, with Chania and Crete as a fixed point of reference and an open view beyond the borders of our island. With responsibility and documentation, giving space to explanation, analysis and the context of each issue, avoiding fragmentary information and temporary sensationalism.
From day one, our theme was clear. Very specific. Not by lack, but by intention. We chose to write about what we felt was worth saying and to capture it in the way it deserved to be said. Without ignoring all those to which, from the outset, we consciously decided not to devote space and time.
In these ten years, we have tried to remain constant in the way we write and the reason why we write. We have placed a strong emphasis on column writing, with writing that seeks candour and clarity of position, guided by independence of thought, respect for facts and responsibility to public discourse. Aiming for consistency, clarity and a clear separation of news from opinion.
The footprint of this ten-year journey, based on all the above-mentioned options, is not exhausted in numbers. It is reflected, among other things, in the relationship of trust formed with the reading public. It is found in the time given to the text and the respect that this implies. The notion that information is built on time and not on the moment.
Ten years later, we continue with the same philosophy and the same commitment, maintaining the way we chose to exist. We write with care, we write with independence and we treat reporting as an act of responsibility and trust.
Today, after ten years, we feel the need to express our sincere thanks to the thousands of readers who have stood by us throughout this journey.
At the same time, we owe a special thank you to the businesses and companies - large and small - that all these years have chosen to be featured and advertised through HANIA.news.
This choice is not just a communicative decision, but a qualitative positioning. A practical support for a smaller but independent media outlet, which has now established a distinctive presence in the media world. Their trust allows us to continue in the same way: independent in our thinking, firm in our principles and consistent with the reader.
PS: With the same respect with which we treat information, we treat the work of other media and journalists. Therefore, any republication of text on HANIA.news is accompanied by an ’active« source and a clear reference to the author when it is signed, as journalistic ethics dictate. This is a self-evident act of professionalism and a minimum sign of respect for journalistic work.
