The debate on the amendment on the Monument to the Unknown Soldier

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will speak today in Parliament on the amendment for the protection of the integrity and the intended use of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier.

The Prime Minister will also attend and speak at 13:00 at the event for the presentation of the Onassis Foundation's donation for the creation of the new transplant centre and the renovation of the Onassis Hospital.

The amendment on the «Unknown Soldier» has been submitted»

The amendment to protect the integrity and intended use of the Unknown Soldier Monument was tabled yesterday, Monday 20 October, in the House of Representatives.

As stated in the amendment, included in the draft law of the Ministry of Transport «Establishment and Organization of the legal entity under public law called the Civil Aviation Service and other provisions of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport», in the area in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue opposite Constitution Square in Athens, as an area of particular historical and national importance, and to preserve the integrity and the intended use of the Monument prohibited

a) the use or occupation of the surface of the site for any purpose other than visiting the Monument and highlighting its significance

b) any alteration of the site

c) the holding of any public open-air gathering, within the meaning of para. 1 of Article 2 of Law No. 4703/2020 (A’ 131), including spontaneous and extraordinary outdoor public gatherings, within the meaning of paras. 4 and 5 of the aforementioned Article 2.

The amendment adds that those who violate par. I shall be punishable by imprisonment for up to one year or by a fine, unless they are punished more severely by another provision.

More specifically, according to the amendment, the Ministry of National Defence shall take all necessary measures for the maintenance, care and promotion of the Monument and the site of par. 1, either by its own means or through the award of relevant contracts.

For the maintenance of public order, including the violation of par. 1, the Greek Police is responsible for public order, according to the provisions of the amendment.
