The British Prime Minister acknowledged early this morning the victory of Labour in the elections and informed that he had already contacted Kir Starmer to congratulate him.
Shunak's premiership ends in a heavy defeat as the Conservatives record one of their worst performances since the party's inception. It is effectively a total reversal of the electoral landscape compared to 2019, when Boris Johnson had a broad majority in the House of Commons and Jeremy Corbyn led Labour to its worst performance since 1935.
For the first time since Gordon Brown (2007-2010), Number 10 in Downing Street will be occupied by a Labour MP, Kir Starmer, who led his party to triumph, securing a large majority in the new parliament.
The opposition Labour Party in Britain wins 326 seats in the general election, ITV reported today, suggesting that it has secured a majority in the 650-seat British parliament.
The Conservative Party holds 144 seats, the Liberal Democrats 58, the Scottish National Party 8, Reform UK 4 and the other parties 26.
«Tonight people here and across the country have spoken and are ready for change,» said the 61-year-old Starmer, addressing voters in his constituency.
After five conservative prime ministers, Brexit, austerity, a crisis of purchasing power and a deteriorating public health system, the British people wanted to show their discontent at the polls and turn the page. The Tories had only one ambition in the final days of the campaign: to limit the scope of defeat.

Britain's future Prime Minister Kir Starmers today promised a «national renewal» of the country after Labour's landslide victory in the general election that returned the party to power after 14 years.
«We did it!» the 61-year-old former lawyer triumphantly declared in the early hours of the morning as his party secured an absolute majority in parliament.
«Our mission now is nothing less than the renewal of the ideas that maintain the unity of our country: national renewal,» Starmer told his party supporters.
«The battle for trust is the battle that will define our era. That is why we campaigned so hard showing that we are capable of serving the people,’ he added.
«Electoral victories do not fall from the sky. They are won hard and hard fought and this victory was won by a changed Labour Party,» Starmers stressed.
«Change starts now,» he pledged. «Now we can look forward,» he noted, assuring that «we will put politics back at the service of citizens,» one of Labour's key campaign slogans.
But Starmer warned that Britain's future government has «a difficult job» to do, «a patient job, a determined job», which will start «immediately».
«I can't promise you it will be easy. It's not enough to press a button to change a country,» he said, as Britain faces a series of problems, with rising commodity prices weighing on citizens and the national health service in trouble.
«Today we are starting a new chapter, we are starting this effort of change, this mission of national renewal and we are starting to rebuild our country,» he concluded.
