Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced today in Paris to three years in prison, one of which is without parole, for corruption and undue influence, a punishment that is unprecedented for a former president of the country.
Sarkozy's long-time lawyer, Thierry Herzog, and former senior judge Gilbert Azibert were given the same sentences.
The Court of Appeal also stripped Sarkozy of his political rights for three years, which means he can't run for office. It also banned Erzog from practicing law for three years.
However, according to the Court of Appeal's decision, Sarkozy will be able to serve the one-year sentence imposed on him without suspension, wearing an electronic bracelet and without going to prison.
