Αμερικάνος αξιωματούχος αποκάλυψε στο Reuters ότι ο ηγέτηςτης Αλ Κάιντα, Αϊμάν αλ Ζαουάχρι, σκοτώθηκε σε αεροπορικό χτύπημα της CIA στην πρωτεύουσα του Αφγανιστάν, την Καμπούλ, που διεξήχθη το σαββατοκύριακο. Νωρίτερα ο Λευκός Οίκος είχε ανακοινώσει ότι ο Τζο Μπάιντεν θα ενημερώσει για ένα «επιτυχημένο αντιτρομοκρατικό χτύπημα». Ο Αλ Ζαουάχρι είχε αναλάβει την ηγεσία της Αλ Κάιντα μετά την εκτέλεση του Οσάαμα Μπιν Λάντεν. Είχε γεννηθεί στην Αίγυπτο και ήταν 71 ετών.
