The 10 TV series everyone is watching right now

What are the ten series that Greece and the world loves these days? Crooks, unruly youth, superheroic anti-heroes, true crime series and a surprise Michael Rakintzis on the BBC:

Inventing Anna

“Inventing Anna” which has remained in the world Top 10 for weeks is about the real-life case of a young woman who deceived New York high society by adopting the identity of a German heiress, defrauding friends, banks and associates who eventually saw her convicted of fraud. The miniseries stars Emmy-winning Julia Garner of “Ozark” fame, along with Anna Chlumsky and Laverne Cox.

Shondaland's Netflix debut came with Bridgerton, but Shonda Rhimes herself didn't write any of the scripts. On this series, however, she will again be a showrunner by proxy, but she will also be a key writer. Rhimes' decision to tell the story mostly through the eyes of the reporter who covered Delvey's case is a good one because it adds more layers to the narrative and keeps the necessary distance from the criminal. In the last two episodes the show goes off the rails in its attempt to suddenly vindicate Delvey by turning her into a #girlboss, but overall it remains fun. If only the episodes weren't almost an hour each, it would be even better.

Inventing Anna is squealing on Netflix.

Euphoria

Euphoria, series produced, written and usually directed by Sam Levinson, returned after three years of absence but has already said goodbye to us. But not before he doubled his audience, before he became HBO's second biggest show after Game of Thrones“, and before Twitter announced it was the most tweeted series in the platform's history (if you feel like this year's memes might have been better than the show itself, you're not necessarily out).

In fact, there have been people who “watched” “Euphoria” via Twitter every Sunday - first because they couldn't help the bombardment on their timeline, and then because they started to enjoy the ritual. In other words, “Euphoria” is now a regular event that proves that weekly TV dates have not been fully replaced by streaming.

Euphoria is broadcast by Vodafone TV.

Peacemaker

I understand that last year's James Gunn's The Suicide Squad came with a flashback-inducing title from 2016 - there are indeed few virtues to the original Suicide Squad - but it was so grossly underrated. Not by critics who had unexpectedly embraced it, but by audiences who didn't honor it in theaters. The film, of course, was released in August and had finally been the most successful DC movie on HBO Max to date, so it was the right investment for Warner Bros. and James Gunn to invest in the Peacemaker character (John Cena) who had already secured his own solo series before the film was even released.

For many it's the surprise of the season so far, for others it's the expected open-hearted caffeine adventure from someone like James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). The series is one of the most successful on Vodafone TV where it airs exclusively in Greece, while the finale currently retains its record ratings for an episode of HBO Max in one day.

Severance

In the near future, you will complete the reading of this proposal. But in the slightly more distant future, a technology company called Lumon Industries offers a process that provides clients with a unique insight into the concept of work-life balance: While we're at work, we won't have memories of our personal lives, and while we're at home, we won't be able to remember any aspect of our professional lives.

That's the start behind this new sci-fi thriller from producer/director Ben Stiller and first-time writer/creator Dan Erickson, with a cast that includes Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro and Christopher Walken, among others. The idea of some giant tech conglomerates controlling our lives is grim subject matter and certainly one of our more modern concerns, but Severance doesn't get didactic. American critics who have already seen the finale speak of a terribly charged finish. The series, now in its fourth episode, is already among the most crowded in the United States.

Severance is squeezing into Apple TV+.

Vikings: Valhalla

Set more than a thousand years ago, in the early 11th century, Vikings: Valhalla chronicles the heroic adventures of some of the most famous Vikings of all time - legendary explorer Leif Erickson, his strong-willed and stubborn sister, Freydis Eriksdoter, and the ambitious Scandinavian prince Harald Sigurdsson. As tensions between the Vikings and the English blue-bloods reach a bloody climax and the Vikings themselves clash over their conflicting Christian and pagan beliefs, these three Vikings embark on an epic journey that will take them across the sea.

The Netflix series is set over 100 years after the events of the original show and is currently in the Netflix Top 10 in 90 countries. The absence of Vikings creator Michael Hirst, however, is glaringly absent from this new effort.

Vikings: Valhalla is streaming on Netflix.

One of us is lying

At Bayview High, five students - Simon (Mark McKenna), Addy (Annalisa Cochrane), Cooper (Chibuikem Uche), Bronwyn (Marianly Tejada) and Nate (Cooper van Grootel) - are placed in detention. Simon, known for creating an online gossip group with his girlfriend Janae (Jessica McLeod) to bury his classmates, suffers a sudden and deadly allergic reaction. The other four had a motive to kill Simon and, after it is determined that his death was no accident, they become part of the investigation.

The series is based on the best-seller by Karen McManus and is coming to a close to the hype of teen TV thrillers that have been booming lately, along with “Cruel Summer”, “Outer Banks”, “The Wilds” and “Panic”. It has been in Netflix's global Top 10 for three weeks now - and in Greece - and has already been renewed for a second season that will move beyond the events of the book.

One of Us Is Lying is swirling on Netflix.

Pieces of Her

I recently recommended the new Greek film “Moon, 66 Questions”, among other things, and because it touches on a question that is rarely asked in Greek cinema and beyond - if we knew who our parents really were and are outside of their role, would we treat them with more leniency? The heroine of that film truly loved her father for the first time when she learns his secret. The heroine of ’Pieces of Her“ will probably go in the opposite direction. What if you suddenly found out that the mother you thought you knew was John Wick;

On her 31st birthday, Andy Oliver (Bella Heathcote of “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women”) and her mother Laura (Toni Collette) are in mortal danger when a gunman opens fire in a shopping mall. To Andy's surprise, Laura intervenes, violently stops the shooter, and goes viral because of a video that goes viral. This unwanted rumor will draw the attention of some dangerous people from a past life of her mother's that Andy never knew.

Aside from Toni Collette, who we'd even see in a phone book recitation, Pieces of Her has our attention for other reasons: the Karin Slaughter book it's based on, one of the most critically acclaimed in 2018, Homeland's Charlotte Stoudt and Lesli Linka Glatter with the latter serving as writer and showrunner, and Big Little Lies and Gone Girl's Bruna Papandrea producing.

Worst roomate ever

Before cohabitation with strangers became a necessity in crisis Greece, our introduction to the concept was mainly through English-language series and films. Even from friends or relatives who were leaving to study abroad and had stories to tell.

In her depiction at least, the circumstances seemed mostly pleasant. Even when the scenes between roommates were surreal (Hugh Grant's roommate in “Notting Hill”, we will never forget you), their use was humorous. But “Worst Roommate Ever” presents instances of miserable, dangerous roommates, the kind that those of us who have people overseas might have heard of, and judging by the 1.5 million views the trailer had before it even premiered, the show has struck a chord. It's currently in the Top 10 in 64 countries.

Super pumped

The story behind the creation of the popular Uber app and the rise and fall of its creator, Travis Kalanick, when he was ousted in a “coup” from the app's board of directors. He is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the cast includes Uma Thurman and Kyle Chandler, and Quentin Tarantino is the narrator. And yet!

The series is in its second week near the top of Cosmote TV's overall Top 10 and has already been renewed for a second season by Showtime where it airs in the United States. It is the intention of Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the creators of Billions, which is running and Super Pumped, that each season of the new series will focus on a different business each time with a big cultural impact.

Super Pumped is shown on Cosmote TV.

The Tourist

Jamie Dornan wakes up with memory loss in an Australian hospital with no memory of anything. But his problems don't stop there, because before he realises what has happened, he gets a phone call from a Greek man - buried underground! - who asks him to rescue him, and at the same time he realizes that someone is trying to kill him. With these invisible threats following him, the hero begins an agonizing battle with time to regain his memory, though what he remembers about himself may not be so good for him.

Good Jason Bourne as Dornan, unconventional co-star Danielle Macdonald next to him, a series that is easily sucked like a shot and Michael Rakintzis (and yet!) on the soundtrack. It's just over a month in Cosmote TV's Top 10.

The Tourist is available in its entirety on the free, on demand COSMOTE TV PLUS catalogue.
