With marches against the state repression The protests kicked off, with high school and college students gathering since early this morning at the Propylaea. With hundreds of participants, the march in Athens began a few minutes after 1:00 p.m. «Greece, land of Greek police officers, informers, murderers, and torturers», «The cop’s gun is magic—it fires into the air and finds whoever’s on the run» and «Blood flows, demanding vengeance,» were some of the slogans that were heard.
Shortly afterward, the march «split» into two, with the anti-authoritarian bloc leading the way and the high school and college students following behind. The morning demonstration concluded with the groups of participants passing through Syntagma Square.
It should be noted that there was a heavy police presence, and law enforcement officers conducted searches of individuals before the march began. Reports that the police carried out six preventive detentions at the Propylaea have not been confirmed.
In Thessaloniki, students, high schoolers, and members of the anti-authoritarian movement held a rally in Kamara and marched at noon.
The protesters chanted slogans against police brutality and proceeded along Egnatia Avenue and Ionos Dragoumis Street to Agios Dimitrios Street, passed in front of the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, and went down Iasonidou Street to Kamara, while a section of the march continued on and concluded the protest in front of the police roadblock at the Fountain.
Calls in the afternoon as well
Protests are planned in other cities across the country, from Thessaloniki to Crete and from Patras to Xanthi.
At 6 p.m. this afternoon in Athens, student associations, left-wing parties, and anti-authoritarian groups will gather at the same location.
On police orders, the «Panepistimio» metro station was closed this morning, and, as is the case every year, a large police presence will be deployed. According to the Hellenic Police, the Security Division and other police departments in the Athens metropolitan area are on standby for «surveillance of targets and checks»; 4,000 police officers and drones will be deployed.
The traffic police are planning special traffic arrangements.
Earlier, tensions flared outside the 1st Vocational High School in Aigaleo after a group of students took to the streets and blocked Thivon Avenue in the direction of Aigaleo. Police and the Fire Department rushed to the scene, and the Fire Department extinguished fires in trash cans.
