The weather will deteriorate today, according to the forecasts of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to occur again mainly in the Ionian Sea and the mainland, with the phenomena, from midday onwards, being locally strong and in some cases accompanied by increased lightning activity, increased winds and hailstorms. In fact, locally hail may be relatively large in size.
Occasional thunderstorms will occur after noon in the prefecture of Attica and the city of Athens, while the areas that will receive significant amounts of rain include the fire-stricken North Evia.
Recommendations to citizens addressed by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection in view of the new weather deterioration.
The GIS recommends that citizens should be particularly careful, ensuring that they take measures to protect themselves from the risks posed by severe weather events.
In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, thunderstorms or gusty winds are forecast:
– Secure objects that, if swept away by severe weather conditions, could cause damage or injury.
– Ensure that the gutters and downspouts of their homes are not blocked and are functioning properly.
- Avoid crossing torrents and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainstorms, and for several hours after the end of the event
– Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
– Take immediate precautions during a hailstorm. Take shelter in a building or car and do not leave the safe area until you are sure that the storm has passed. Hailstorms can also be very dangerous for animals.
– Avoid walking under large trees, hanging signs, and generally areas where light objects (e.g., flower pots, broken glass, etc.) may become detached and fall to the ground (e.g., under balconies).
– Follow the instructions of the local authorities, such as the traffic police, etc., to the letter.
At the same time, according to a statement by the Fire Department, the operational plan for dealing with the risks of flooding and accompanying phenomena, and in a state of increased readiness and further escalation if required, the Fire Services of the areas expected to manifest the phenomena, in order to deal directly with any problems from the outbreak of dangerous weather phenomena.
Furthermore, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr) has informed the competent government departments involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, in order to be in increased readiness for civil protection, in order to deal immediately with the effects of the outbreak of severe weather phenomena.
