TERNA Energy: «Journey to Kythera» and Monemvasia with new 178 MW wind turbines

Four new large wind farms is preparing to implement the TERNA Energy in areas where it has so far not had a presence. The leader of the Greek RES market, received in early August the license from the RAE for his «green landing» in the Kythera and in Monemvasia.

These are projects that date back to a decade ago as the applications were submitted in 2008-2009. These investments will be made in cooperation with Vector Wind Farms Greece (owned by Ilias Kefalas). In the relevant joint ventures per park, Terna Energy holds a 90% stake and Vector 10%.

Specifically, the «trip to Kythera» for TENERG, based on the producer's certificates granted by RAE, includes three wind farms, with a total capacity of 132 MW and in particular:

  • A wind power plant with an installed capacity of 32 MW and a maximum production capacity of 32 MW, consisting of 5 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 6.4 MW each and a blade diameter of 155 metres, located at «Carbuncle-Phoenix» of the Municipal Unit of Kythera
  • A wind power plant with an installed capacity of 52 MW and a maximum production capacity of 52 MW, consisting of 26 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.0 MW each and a blade diameter of 82 metres, located at «Ribbons» of the Municipal Unit of Kythera.
  • A wind power plant with an installed capacity of 48 MW and a maximum production capacity of 48 MW, consisting of 24 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.0 MW each and a blade diameter of 82 metres, located at «Xerocabia», of the Municipal Unit of Kythera.

The fourth wind farm will have an installed capacity of 46 MW and a maximum production capacity of 46 MW, consisting of 23 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.0 MW each and a blade diameter of 82 meters, and will be located at the «Havalas» site in the Municipality of Monemvasia.

Widening the gap with the competition

The four new wind farms will come to further strengthen Terna Energy's portfolio, which is constantly growing, further widening the gap with the competition. The Group currently has, in Greece and abroad, 1,374 MW of wind farms in operation, 397 MW under construction or ready for construction and 5,132 MW under licensing.

Based on the latest ELETAEN data on the dynamics of the wind energy players in the first half of this year, TENERG was leading the race with 703 MW, compared to 665.1 in 2020, followed by Hellaktor with 482 MW, while ENEL Green Power was even further behind with 368 MW, which do not show any differentiation compared to the 2020 figures.

The only certainty is that there are even bigger projects to come. Peristeris had detailed the giant investment programme targeting new projects with a total capacity of around 7 GW, of which 5 GW have already secured the first licences, are maturing and will gradually start to be implemented.

In this context, the Group's total installed capacity is expected to approach 3,000 MW within the next five years, with new onshore and offshore wind and photovoltaic farms, as well as new investments in energy storage, where the company has 2,000 MW in various stages of licensing and under development not only in pumped storage but also in batteries.

...What about that article with Europa Nostra putting Kythera -along with Sikinos, Tinos, Amorgos, Kimolos- under threat, as a landscape vulnerable to the possibility of its future conversion into an industrial zone? Mayor Stratos Harhalakis shakes his head in the negative. «We have received proposals from companies for wind turbines, but none of us are going to accept them. We own the ridges. Who's going to give them?» The Enchori scheme, by his own admission, is embraced by the people of the island, the only people unhappy are those who might want 500 umbrellas on 300 sq m and can't. The ridges of Kythera (Dimitris Kyriakopoulos / SOOC) The well-known painter Manolis Haros, a municipal councillor in Tsirigo, explains, however, that if anyone should be credited with keeping the secret on the island, it is George Kasimatis, Professor of Constitutional Law, former director of the Legal Office of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou. A native Kythirian, the jurist ensured, by updating, the concept of domestic property. He locked its legal framework with competence. He safeguarded the right that the rest of the Ionian Islands - from their incorporation into Greece until today - have been denied.
