«After a whole week of guilty silence and statements that passed the buck, claiming that this is an old case that has already been decided by the courts, Mr. Mitsotakis’s office was forced today to release documents that supposedly justify the the prime minister's false statement of assets »for the past four years, as well as his illegal possession of shares in a company based abroad," SYRIZA-PS emphasizes in a lengthy statement released today.
«Except that the response not only fails to justify the illegality but actually makes matters even worse,» comments the official opposition, noting that «the 2016 private transfer agreement between members of the prime minister’s family, without this even being accompanied by official documents from the competent authorities, is more of a sign of panic »rather than proof of legality or even the appearance of legality.".
As he states, «especially when it comes to an agreement that is contradicted by the records of the French Republic, since those records show that the prime minister’s wife still holds the address of the company in question to this day, an act that violates the law, », but also to take administrative action in late 2020, as revealed today by the newspaper Documento.".
«In a nutshell, with his response today, it’s as if the country’s prime minister were arguing that anyone can break the law and, when caught, simply show a piece of paper bearing his own signature and those of the people being investigated, and get off the hook, disregarding the official documents,» he adds, calling on «Mr. Mitsotakis to set aside the tearful claims about his wife being targeted and to respond to the substance of the matter, as every public figure in a position of power is obligated to do, both in Greece and in any other European country, where he could not hold his ground for even a second without clear answers.».
Specifically, he poses the following questions to the prime minister: «Why has he been saying for a week that the matter has been decided by the courts and Is it now being forced to provide answers once again by publishing a private agreement?; When was he telling the truth? Last Sunday or today? How is it possible that administrative acts were carried out in 2020, and under what authority were they carried out, when the agreement he made public today was drafted five years ago?; In a nutshell, how was this company transferred in 2020 with the signature of the prime minister’s wife, given that since 2016 it had not belonged to her but to her brother?; »And finally, do the laws in this country apply to everyone, or is there an exception for Mr. Mitsotakis and his family?"
«We expect clear answers and adequate explanations. We expect the country’s prime minister not to consider himself an emperor, but to be equal before the law, just like every Greek citizen. This is not a matter of political maneuvering or partisan confrontation. It is a matter of democracy, equality before the law, and justice,» concludes the statement from SYRIZA-PS.
