Brassica brassica

Brassica brassica (Romagn.) Antonin &Noordel.

Syn. Micromphale brassicolens (Romagn.)P.D.Orton
Syn. Marasmius brassicolens Romagn , Collybia brassicolens
Quite common, relatively small mushroom (cap diameter 15-40 mm) with a characteristic smell of garlic or polycured cabbage. Fruiting begins from early autumn to January in the south in coniferous or broadleaf forests. In Kythera I found it in dense clumps in the small pine forests of the island in decaying vegetation under forbs (quercus coccifera).
The genus gymnopus includes about 300 species, including gymnopus dryophilus which is considered edible although not of particular nutritional value.
Many of the species now considered to belong to the genus were originally classified in other genera, hence the many synonyms.
The name of the genus comes from the Greek words naked and poos-podos, while the characteristic adjective of the species comes from the Latin brassica = cabbage and the suffix -olens = with smell.
