Rain and localized thunderstorms are expected across much of the western, southern, and eastern parts of the country today, Wednesday, according to the latest forecast data from meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens.
The reason for the change in the weather is the southeastward movement of a disturbance in the middle troposphere from northwestern Europe toward the Mediterranean region and the development of a surface low in the of the central Mediterranean.
More specifically, rain and local thunderstorms are expected today starting in the early morning hours in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Central Greece, the southern Peloponnese, Attica, Euboea, the Cyclades, southern Crete, the Dodecanese, the islands of the eastern and northern Aegean, and Thrace. In addition, heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in the Dodecanese, the islands of the eastern and northeastern Aegean, and the northern Ionian Sea, where they are likely to be accompanied by significant rainfall. There is a small chance of small hail in parts of the Ionian and Aegean Seas. South-southeasterly winds will blow over the seas at 5–6 Beaufort, and locally in the eastern and southeastern Aegean up to 7 Beaufort.
Finally, there will be a significant rise in minimum temperatures, in the range of 5–7 degrees, due to prevailing southerly winds and the influx of warmer air masses.
Rain and thunderstorms early Thursday morning are likely to intensify temporarily in parts of Thrace.
According to the Rainfall Event Classification (RPI) system, which is implemented by the Meteo unit of the National Observatory of Athens, tomorrow’s rainfall event is classified as Category 3 (Significant).
