The website travelstyle.gr has dedicated an article to Diakofto Beach, with its turquoise waters, white sand, and the “Nordland” shipwreck.
In the article, we read:
Kythira: The emerald-green beach with white sand and a shipwreck
Anyone who visits the beach Diakofiti On Kythira, you’ll be enchanted by its beauty and wonder if you’re on some exotic island. The waters are shallow and turquoise, and the sand is snow-white. It is located on the northeastern side of the island, in one of the most beautiful spots on Kythira, right next to the main harbor.
Diakofti Beach is ideal for families with young children thanks to its calm and very warm waters. At the beachside taverns, you can enjoy fresh fish and sample exquisite seafood appetizers and traditional Greek cuisine. The beach has both a developed section and a wild beach, so the choice is yours.
But if you decide to stay out late enjoying your cocktail by the sea, just know that as soon as the moon rises, its reflection on the sea’s surface and the colors you’ll see will be of unparalleled beauty. A tip for romantics.
The Shipwreck at Diakofti
On the islet of Dragonares—off the port of Diakofto on Kythira—the ship “Nordland” ran aground on August 29, 2000. The reason? The crew had… had one too many!
Since then, the shipwreck has remained in place and has become one of the island’s modern attractions, a magnet, so to speak, for underwater explorers, as the location and the circumstances of the ship’s grounding are factors that generate great interest.
The “Nordland” is lying partially submerged, with its stern at a depth of about 30 meters and its bow protruding above the water.
What else you'll see
If you enjoy walking and spending time in nature and don’t want to spend the whole day at the beach, then this is your chance to visit the Chousta Cave, located east of the village, where pottery from Roman and Classical times has been found.
We also recommend a boat tour of the coastal caves Asprogas and Points east of the village, where, in addition to the natural beauty you’ll encounter, you may also come across loggerhead sea turtles.
