The “Aether” Experimental Theater Workshop presents a play titled «Behind the Mask» in Kythira. Production is organized by Pasiphae AMKE. The performances will take place at the Zeidoros Multipurpose Hall in Kapsali, Kythira, on July 16 and 17, 2026, starting at 9:30 p.m..
The Plot and the Dramaturgy
The play is a theatrical journey between truth and lies, bringing together the dramatic voices of great playwrights (Cocteau, Beckett, Shakespeare, Molière, Ibsen, and T. Williams). Spanning different eras, the work explores the search for identity, posing the question: «Who are you behind the mask?».
Female figures from timeless works transport the viewer to the very core of the human soul, where love, death, jealousy, pain, and anticipation dwell. The heroines are confronted with their own masks, which are gradually stripped away in a journey that oscillates between light and darkness.
This theatrical journey features excerpts from the following iconic works:
- Jean Cocteau's *The Liar* (1948): It tells the story of a woman who moves between truth and lies, inventing her own reality.
- Waiting for Godot (1949) by Samuel Beckett: It depicts Vladimir and Estragon waiting in an absurd world, with identities that fluctuate between hope and futility.
- Twelfth Night, or What You Will (1601) by William Shakespeare: A comedy of misunderstandings in which identity becomes a game, through men's disguises.
- "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1947) by Tennessee Williams: It focuses on Blanche Dibo, who is confronted with harsh reality and finds an escape in illusions.
- Molière's *The Misanthrope* (1666): A power play that highlights the conflict between social hypocrisy and the truth.
- "Edda Gambler" (1890) by Henrik Ibsen: It shows Edda's sense of being trapped and her loss of control when she realizes she has reached a dead end.
- *A Doll's House* (1879) by Henrik Ibsen: It reveals the cracks in a relationship and the fabricated reality between Nora and Torvald.
